Voice charting lets you call out readings while both hands stay on the probe and mirror. Zavy enters what you say into the chart and reads it back so you know it went in. You can still use the keyboard and mouse at any time.
Early access. Voice charting is part of Perio Chart v2.
Privacy: speech recognition runs in your browser, on your computer. Audio is never uploaded, sent to a transcription service or stored.
Get set up
What you need
A headset with a boom microphone. The computer's built-in mic picks up the suction and handpiece and mishears you. A wireless headset is best.
An open, editable exam. Voice isn't available on locked exams (more than 24 hours old).
Start voice
Open the patient, go to Periodontal and open today's exam. If you see the classic chart, click the flask button next to New (Preview new version).
Click Start voice in the toolbar.
The first time on each computer, a setup guide opens. It covers your headset, where to put the mic and what each sound means. Read it, then click Start listening.
If your browser asks to use the microphone, click Allow.
The button changes to Stop voice, and a strip under the toolbar shows what Zavy is hearing.
The first time you start voice on a computer, the speech model downloads, so it may take a moment. After that it starts faster.
To see the setup guide again: click ? in the toolbar and choose Headset and microphone setup guide. If you ticked "Don't show this again", untick it there. This setting is saved per computer.
Voice engine: the chart's Settings drawer shows Voice recognition engine: Zavy Voice Engine. You can't change it while voice is on.
Greyed-out Voice button: voice isn't set up for your site yet. Contact Zavy support.
Four rules
A number on its own is always a reading. Say "three two three" and it goes into the row under the cursor.
Say tooth numbers as two digits, after "jump" or "go". Say "jump one three", not "jump to thirteen". Leave out "to" and "tooth" because they sound like "two".
Everything else starts with its keyword. For example "bifurcation two", "mobility two", "bone loss one", "bleeding", "missing".
Say all three sites, then pause. If Zavy only hears two numbers, it buzzes and enters nothing. Say all three again.
Keywords on screen
When voice is on, the sidebar shows Keywords to say for optimal performance. It disappears when you stop voice.
The strip under the toolbar shows what Zavy heard. The transcript under the chart lists every command, marked applied or rejected.
For the full list, click ? in the toolbar and open Voice.
Commands
Pocket depths and margins
Say | What happens |
"three two three" | Enters 3, 2, 3 for the tooth's three sites and moves on |
"twelve" | Enters 12 in the current cell. Say 10–19 as one word, not "one two". |
"plus three" | Another way to say 13. "three two plus two" enters 3, 2, 12. |
"minus two" | A negative gingival margin. "negative two" also works. |
"healthy" | Enters 2-1-2 |
"normal" | Enters 3-2-3 |
"gingivitis" | Enters 4-3-4 |
"normal normal normal" | Enters 3-2-3 on the next three teeth |
"repeat four" | Repeats your last three readings on the next four teeth |
"pocket depth" / "gingival margin" | Switches row. "depth", "margin" and "recession" also work. |
Findings
Say | What happens |
"bleeding" | Marks bleeding at the current site |
"mesial bleeding" / "distal plaque" | Marks that site on the current tooth |
"whole bleeding" | Marks all three sites. Say "whole", not "full". |
"interproximal bleeding" | Marks distal and mesial on the current tooth |
"generalized interproximal bleeding" | Marks distal and mesial on every tooth |
"plaque" | Marks plaque, same as bleeding |
"pus" or "purulent" | Marks suppuration |
"bifurcation two" | Furcation grade 2 at the current site |
"mobility two" | Mobility grade II for the tooth (0–3) |
"bone loss one" | Bone loss grade for the tooth (0–3) |
Say "bifurcation", not "furcation", and "pus", not "suppuration". Zavy only listens for the words on its list, and "furcation" and "suppuration" aren't on it. You can always use the F key for furcation.
Call findings before that tooth's depths. The cursor moves to the next tooth once the depths go in. If it has already moved, say "back", or name the site ("mesial bleeding").
Tooth status
Say | What happens |
"missing" | Marks the tooth missing. It's skipped from then on. |
"implant" | Marks an implant with your practice's default material |
"crown" | Marks a crown with the default material |
"restore tooth" | Brings a missing tooth back |
"remove third molars" | Marks all four wisdom teeth missing |
"remove upper arch" / "remove lower arch" | Marks the whole arch missing |
Tooth status also updates the patient's dental chart. To choose a different material, right-click the tooth.
Removing an arch or the third molars happens straight away. An Undo button shows in the strip until you stop voice, and it puts every tooth back as it was.
Saying "missing" twice doesn't undo it. These commands set the status. They don't switch it on and off.
Moving around
Say | What happens |
"jump one three" | Moves to tooth 13. "go one three" also works. |
"jump one four lingual" | Moves to the inner face. "palatal" also works, and "buccal" moves back. |
"jump one four mesial" | Moves to a site. Add a face if you need one: "jump one four mesial lingual". |
"next" / "skip" | Moves forward one site |
"back" | Moves back one site |
"where am I" | Reads out where the cursor is |
"finished" | Saves and closes the exam |
"stop listening" | Turns voice off |
The cursor follows your entry order. You'll hear two rising beeps when it moves to a new quadrant or the other side of the arch.
Fixing mistakes
Say | What happens |
"undo" | Removes the last value |
"undo three" | Removes the last three values |
"scratch that" | Removes everything from your last command |
You can also click any cell and type.
Sounds
Sound | Meaning |
Short high beep | A value, finding or grade was entered |
Lower, softer beep | The cursor moved |
Two falling beeps | Something was undone |
Two rising beeps | Moved to a new quadrant or the other side of the arch |
Low buzz | Not understood. Nothing was entered, so say it again. |
Two quick beeps | A 4–5 mm pocket was entered |
Three fast beeps | A 6 mm or deeper pocket was entered |
Spoken read-back | The values entered, then the next tooth |
Zavy reads values back as single digits, so 12 is read as "one two". If it's wrong, say "scratch that" and try again.
You can turn sounds on or off with the three switches in the strip:
Read each value back as you enter it
Beep when a pocket reaches the 4mm red-flag limit
Read out the tooth number as you move onto it
Example: upper right quadrant
The cursor is on tooth 18 buccal. Click Start voice and say each line, then pause:
"three two three": 18 gets 3, 2, 3 and the cursor moves to 17.
"mesial bleeding": marks bleeding on 17 mesial.
"four three plus three": 17 gets 4, 3, 13. You hear three fast beeps for the 13 mm pocket.
"bifurcation two": records furcation grade 2 on 16.
"normal": 16 gets 3, 2, 3.
"jump one four": moves to 14.
"missing": marks 14 missing and moves to 13.
"two one two": you hear a buzz, because Zavy only caught two numbers. Nothing is entered.
"two one two": this time 13 gets 2, 1, 2.
"finished": saves and closes the exam.
Coming from Florida Probe VoiceWorks
Most VoiceWorks commands work the same way. The differences:
VoiceWorks | Zavy |
One-word commands, like | Normal speech: "jump one four lingual" (FDI numbering) |
Accepts 1, 2 or 3 numbers | Accepts 1 or 3 numbers. Two numbers are rejected. |
| Same |
| Same, but say "restore tooth" instead of ReEnter. No Bridge or Impacted yet. |
| Same, with an Undo button |
| Same, plus "scratch that" |
| Not yet. Enter margins on the GM row ("minus two" for recession). |
| Not needed. Say "pocket depth" or "gingival margin" to switch rows. |
| Not needed. Every value saves automatically. |
| "finished" |
Deep pocket sirens | Two beeps for 4–5 mm, three for 6 mm+ |
Fixed 1–32 path | Set your own path in Settings |
Troubleshooting
Problem | What to do |
Voice button is greyed out | Voice isn't set up for your site. Contact Zavy support. |
No voice button | The exam is locked (more than 24 hours old). |
Red Voice stopped banner | The microphone or speech engine stopped. The banner says why. Check the mic permission and headset, then click Start voice. You can keep charting by keyboard. |
Slow to start the first time | The speech model is downloading. Later starts are faster. |
Lots of buzzes | Move the mic closer to your mouth and away from the suction. Check the strip to see what Zavy is hearing. |
A tooth number went in as a reading | Start tooth numbers with "jump" or "go". |
Furcation won't go in | Say "bifurcation". Furcation can only be recorded on teeth that have one. |
Can't change the voice engine | Stop voice first. |
Why Zavy buzzes instead of guessing: a wrong reading in the clinical record is worse than saying it twice. So if Zavy isn't sure, it enters nothing and tells you. Everything it does enter is in the transcript.
